Our wonderful relationship with London Youth Choirs began during lockdown when it was time for us to find a local charity to support that had the same interests as us: principally singing but, more importantly, the enjoyment of singing. When we found LYC, and discovered that LYC West – their Ealing-based choir for 8–11 year olds – was in its earliest days, it felt like a match made in heaven.
The work that LYC does to improve young lives through singing is transformational. With their ten choirs for ages 7–23, and numerous free programmes in schools, LYC helps thousands of young Londoners each year discover the joys and benefits of singing. They particularly work to improve access for disadvantaged young people, supporting them to find their unique voice and thrive through music. Without LYC, many young people would never discover and enjoy their musical and singing skills, something that we at Petros Singers feel is hugely important.
Our earliest fundraising for LYC started with simple bucket shaking at the end of concerts, and the generosity of our audience members is so very gratefully received. Since then, we have ensured that our fundraising is part of The Big Give and similar schemes, which means the amount raised is doubled!
It was really wonderful for Petros Singers to share the stage with LYC West at our 40th-anniversary concert in July 2023; our joint rendition of Richard Bannan’s adaptation of Matilda literally made audience members cry. There are so many benefits that intergenerational singing bring: both adults and children learn and are inspired by each other, and can celebrate the sheer pleasure of singing together. Most recently, it was a pleasure to perform with LYC West an LYC Junior Boys at our Christmas concert, Saint Nicholas, in December 2025. Their exuberant and joyful singing delighted the audience and Petros Singers alike.
