Monteverdi Vespers
Claudio Monteverdi is rightly regarded as the first great master of large-scale choral music. His Vespro della Beata Vergine – better known simply as the Vespers, and nominally in honour of the Blessed Virgin – was published in 1610 and remains a landmark in the evolution of Western music. Seamlessly blending the rich traditions of Renaissance sacred music with the bold, expressive style of early opera, Monteverdi created a work of astonishing range and beauty.
By turns intimate and majestic, serene and dramatic, spiritual and sensual, the Vespers offers a dazzling array of sound, taking us on a vibrant and uplifting musical journey.
